Hawaii: Honolulu Zoo
Someone needs to tell me stuff… Like “Annie, don’t go to the zoo around noon, it’s hot and all the animals will want to take a nap.” I’m an urban chick, I don’t know stuff like that…
Anyway, the visit to the zoo was by no means a bust (not like the ill-fated ice cream sandwich trip John and I attempted in San Francisco. They’re closed till noon? Really??). I saw plenty of animals, a whole metric shit ton of different birds (some of them extremely beautiful, and I don’t normally care too much for the bird-portion of a zoo) and my favourite, the elephants, decided they wanted to have a dip in their own private pool and gave us quite a show. I got to see Rusti the huge orangutang and his mate, Violet. Or at least, we saw her fur, she was hiding in a huge plastic box with the stiff back hair sticking out, giving away her position. Apparently, she is the more playful of the two, so whenever the keepers give them stuff to play with she steals it all and uses it in turns. Rusti, for the most part, entertained himself by not giving a shit about us and picking boogers out of his nose.
The tiger was a no show, as was the Aaaardvaaark, but the chimps at least gave us the finger and the lions spread out to show us their genitals in the warm sun. Lovely…
Honolulu Zoo is straight across the road from the Polynesian Hostel (my home for this stay) and costs 14$ for any, normal, non-military or non-decrepitly old person so I thought it was a good way to kill a few hours since I am slightly sunburned and have given myself a penalty of “no beach until Sunday”. I wasn’t wrong, it was a cool zoo, even with the animals being seriously lazy. We even saw a lizard trying to climb over (or hump) a turtle… The jury’s still out…
Flamingos, freakin’ Miami Vice, dudes!
Stop monkeying around… Worse jokes than mine…
At least they try to make up for the non-operative living animals with statues, I guess that’s something…
If you’d like to go to another zoo… Like Auckland. Quick trip.
Meanwhile, in Jurassic Park…
Out of all the exotic wildlife, Hawaii has chosen the goose as their national animal…
Lovable though, I’ll give them that
Spot the lazy Komodo Dragon
Peacocks dodging kids to get to tourist food. Almost like a national sport for birds…
This part was kind of cool, you could sit in here and watch free flying birds
These guys where not free flying 😛
Hooded Vulture, gettin’ a tan
Ooh! Ooh! OOOH!
I’d love too 😛
“Fuck off, tourists..”
Not quite as cute…
Cliffleaper? Rockclimbers? I call them goats.
Some visitor behind me started singing “datta, darra darra, AFRO CIRCUS!” from Madagascar… I lolled.
Information. It’s good to have.
Yeah, I was there!
I quite like all the info tablets, statues and decorations, it’s quite the beautiful zoo
They’re bathing! I actually have a video of this, no joke. I love elephants ❤
A nice, shady place to get out of the sun, filled with ornaments and decorations. Beautiful spot.
Nothing short of a FANTASTIC picture of the ornamented plinth…
Check these guys out…
“Dude, I’m like a million years old…”
ORangutang play pin
Water as a psychological barrier
Not that the lemurs give a shit… “I’ve told you, dude, sometimes I just don’t like to move it, move it…”
More psyching the monkey population
Cityscape almost forgotten when you’re in the zoo. They did a good job there.
And I got close to an elephant 😛
Another beautiful statue
Nature hiding concrete
And just for your viewing pleasure, what I did after the zoo
Before you start: I’m sitting in the shade…
